MMUF Fellow Monica Martinez wins Carnegie Fellowship

May 01, 2017

MMUF PhD and Brown University assistant professor of American and ethnic studies Monica Martinez was awarded an Andrew Carnegie fellowship in April for her research project "New Narratives for Reckoning with Histories of Violence." The Carnegie fellowship, which was awarded to 35 scholars this year, carries a $200,000 award that can be used in support of winners' current research. Dr. Martinez, who also earned her BA from Brown and was selected for MMUF while an undergraduate there, went on to earn her PhD in American Studies from Yale University in 2012. She plans to use the Carnegie award to complete her first book, The Injustice Never Leaves You: Anti-Mexican Violence in the Texas Borderlands, and to begin a second project, "Mapping Violence." This new project will incorporate a publicly accessible digital mapping platform that will chart episodes of racial violence in Texas between 1900 and 1930. Congratulations, Monica!
